Sun Pharma recalls Metformin tablets from the US market

Sun Pharma recalls Metformin HCl tablets from the US market due to contamination by activated carbon :

Sun Pharma recalls a diabetes drug called Metformin Hydrochloride (HCl) tablets, 500 mg from the US[1] market. Over 50,868 bottles of these extended-release tablets are being recalled as per the USFDA[2].

The US health regulator stated that the US-based arm of this drug firm is initiating this recall. It further stated that due to the contamination of the lot by a foreign substance called activated charcoal. The lot being recalled consists of 500 count bottles.

These tablets were manufactured in the company’s manufacturing plant in Gujarat. It was distributed in the US by Sun Pharma Industries Inc., situated in Cranbury.

Per the FDA, this recall is categorized as a Class II recall. This type of recall is generally initiated when the use or exposure to a product causes temporary or reversible side effects. It is also done when the probability of serious adverse effects is remote.

This nationwide recall was initiated by Sun Pharma on 4 May 2021.
