Mechanism of ActionXylometazoline, a sympathomimetic, is a direct-acting drug. It acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the nasal mucosa, causing vasoconstriction. In turn, the result is a decrease in blood flow in the nasal passages, relieving nasal congestion.
