Mechanism of ActionAtorvastatin competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase (3-hydroxy-2-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A) enzyme and prevents the conversion of HMGCoA to mevalonate. It also enhances the uptake of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in the liver by upregulating the LDL receptors. It also elicits its action by reducing the very low-density lipoproteins- cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and intermediate-density lipoproteins.
